There is nothing more exciting than using your own freshly cut, home grown herbs in your cooking and salads. Burnet is an attractive plant growing to about 30cm tall.

Its dark green leaves of slightly bitter flavour, similar to that of cucumber is ideal for salad use.

The plant produces pretty little red flowers and is evergreen.

This herb is not really suitable for drying as the leaves tend to lose their flavour.

Seed count; 95

SOW OUTSIDE in spring. Sow in drills and space the seed out. Cover with fine soil and water well. Transplant when large enough to permanent position.

GROW in any garden soil and add lime if required.

SITE in sun or half shade.

HARVEST the young leaves any time

DRY No need as Burnet is very hardy and is available through the winter.

USE Lavishly in salads especially in winter. Burnet is most nutritious being a deep rooting herb. May also be used in soups, cream cheese and herb butters. It blends very well with other herbs. The decorative leaves add flavour and decoration to summer drinks. To obtain the maximum amount of leaf the plants should be not be allowed to flower.
